Some stories never make it into the history books.

History is often told through textbooks, official records, and dominant narratives. Yet some stories exist only in the memories of those who lived them.

The events surrounding 1965 and the mass killings that followed left lasting scars on individuals, families, and communities across Indonesia. For many survivors and their descendants, stigma, fear, and decades of silence have made these experiences difficult to share.

The 1965 Indonesian Oral Histories Project seeks to preserve these memories, documenting personal experiences that have too often remained unheard.

Listen.

Interview older Indonesians to document personal recollections and firsthand experiences.

Preserve.

Create an accessible digital archive that safeguards these memories for future generations.

Understand.

Make space for overlooked perspectives and deepen our understanding of Indonesia's past through individual stories.
